Metering Mode

My Understanding of Metering Modes

Metering Modes refers to the way in which the camera adjusts the exposure of a photo. It is virtually the camera's brain.

Zone Metering
The metering mode refers to the different zones that the camera splits the background into. There could be as little as 5 zones or as many as 500 depending on your camera. Zones that the camera uses affects the exposure of the image about to be captured. Zone 1 is the clearest zone when taking a photo, if you focus on an object in zone 1, the object is clearer and more sharp then the other surroundings.

Centre Weighted Metering
Centre weighted metering gives the most weight to the photograph while still allowing other surrounding elements to play their part.

Spot Metering
Spot metering only focuses on a small spot in the middle of the frae, disregarding all other sections outside of it. Spot metering is good for capturing indoor images that are lit up with outside light.

Matrix Metering
Matrix metering concentrates on the different parts of the photo depending on how the light is distributed throughout the scene. It looks at different light levels and attempts to find the perfect one that matches the photo and picks an aperture and shutter speed accordingly.
