Logo Design

Definition

Logo- a symbol or other small design adopted by an organisation to identify its products, uniform, vehicles, etc.

I think this logo is very effective because it is simple. People usually remember the most simple of logo designs and this is one that is known world wide. Apples are something that we use in our everyday lives, and the symbol has a bite in which makes it original.

The Nike logo is an effective logo. The unique 'tick' sign is a symbol that everyone loves, the tick symbol is very easy to remember and is very captivating. Nike has given the tick symbol a meaning, which is their motto which is 'Just Do It'.

This logo is very effective because it is visually aesthetic and captures the audiences eye. It looks like the chip is on fire and with the contrast of the dark and light colours it gives the viewers a nice feel. Also the logo is in the shape of a chip and we know that Doritos are a chips company.

Structural Frame Analyses- Times Up

Times Up

Composition: Objects take up the whole frame
Camera Angle: Top View
Light Angle: Left and Right Side

This photograph is my favourite as the colour, line and texture of the image, I believe, give viewers a nice feel and one that brings meaning. The texture in the image is smooth as the noise in it has been reduced on the piece and on the glass of the clock. The colour in this image is a nice sepia tone which contrast with the dark chess piece and gives the picture an old feeling. The background is out of focus, while the closest numbers on the clock are in focus, which creates a point where viewers eyes are led to. The chess piece i situated on the glass of the clock and is turned over, which means "forfeit in chess". The title Times Up signifies that in life, sometimes we are limited by time, and in life our time is a key factor that could help us in situations. The materials I used for this image include, clocks, chess pieces and light sources (lamps). The techniques I used include using lighting from an artificial source and also editing my photos in photoshop to produce an aesthetically pleasing photo. This image is taken as a still life using Olive Cotton's style.

Olive Cotton- Photos

To capture this image, I used some objects and zoomed in to them at a low view point so that it would be hard to distinguish what the objects were. The lighting was coming from the left side of the image from a window which gave natural sunlight.

For this image, I zoomed close into the image and focused in on the little indents and blurred out the background. The object was a shell which had a nice glossy finish, which looked great when zoomed
into. The lighting again was caused by natural sunlight, from a window on the left side of the photo

This image is captured from a low view point this time focusing on the plant brush and blurring out the plant stem. This created an image that looked good and focused on the main thing. The source of light was coming from sunlight this lightened the left side and brought darkness to the other side.

This object is a small rosary that is sitting on a ledge. The sharp reflection coming of the object gave the image a nice touch as we could see that the light was coming from above the image. The image focused in on some of the balls where as it blurred out the ones closer to the viewer, this produced a beautiful image.

This image is one of my favourites as this photo is of a clock and represents time. The artificial lighting came from two lamps from the left and right of the image which produced some nice shadows inside the clock. The second hand gives a shadow which is seen on the clock which gives it a nice touch. Zooming in on the 10, 11, and 12 numbers gives a sense that time is old and will keep on going.

To capture this image, I zoomed into the end of a shell and focused in on the various patterns on it had. The lighting was coming from the right side of the image, from a warm lighting lamp. The contrast between the dark background and the light, cloudy colour of the shell go together beautifully and aids in the aesthetics of this photo.

Max Dupain- Photo Analyses

The Jetty, 1952

silver gelatin photograph
40.5 x 50.5 cm
signed and dated lower right: Max Dupain '52
Sold for $3,840 (inc. BP) in Auction 4 - 16 & 17 April 2008, Melbourne

Max Dupain's image, 'The Jetty', is a beautiful photo that uses light in an interesting way to create different interpretations. Lighting is used in this photo between the contrast of the sky and dark water which leaves us in awe. The objects that are on the jetty have been placed very carefully and thoughtfully to aid in the construction of this image. Max Dupain has achieved an excellent image also by the use of shadows that are on the wharf, which are 'leading lines' towards the horizon.

Olive Cotton (Life and Work)

Cotton studied arts at Sydney University, majoring in mathematics, and went to work with Max Dupain, in his studio, as an assistant. Cotton's curious career reflects the imbalances in gender and various social restrictions. She was drawn to the play and the movement of light to enhance her photos to make it perfect for the viewer to understand and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Max Dupain- More Edits

I think this image is great as the various shades of grey, black and white shine throughout the image. The shot is taken on a beach from a low viewpoint in an abundance of weeds.

I took this image from a high view point looking down on the leaves and the silhouetted person in the background. I think the shadows in the image go well with contrast of the dark and light colours in the foreground and the background.

This image is taken from a low view point looking at the stumps of a tree and an opening in a fence. The shadows of the tree are found on the deck towards the bottom of the image. The different tones in the image create a sense of balance and unity.

Class Task - Research Task

Max Dupain

In groups of three complete the following questions : all research must be placed as a blog post and EACH student must have their own info

ARTIST:
1. Online research of the Photographer Max Dupain
Max Dupain is regarded as one of the Australia's greatest photographers. He had many photographic practices and stuck to his own method. Max Dupain served in the war and while he was there, Olive Cotton, his partner and childhood friend, ran his photography studio.

2. Include 5 bullet points on his background, ie: where he was born, where did he learn his skills, what his family life etc...
  • Max Dupain was born in Ashfield, Sydney to Ena and George Dupain
  • He was educated at Sydney Grammar School
  • Max Dupain received his first camera when he was 13 years of age and quickly grew interest in photography
  • Died in 1992
  • He learnt his skills by meeting other photographers and entering in many competitions and received a few awards at a young age.

3. Explain his photographic practice: what did he strive to achieve in his work'

Max Dupain strived to achieve simplicity and directness in his work. This created images of boldness, graphic composition and photos of sharp focus. Max Dupain's collection of photographs include beaches, nudes, still life and architecture. He was particularly known for his beach culture in his photographs. Max Dupain was mainly interested in two types of photography.
Portraiture: Between 1930's - 1960's, Max Dupain's professional mainly consisted of portraiture. Photographs included moody portraits of the Russian Ballet in the 1930's. Max Dupain preferred portraits that had a creative subject field.

Documentary Photography: The experience at war, influenced Max Dupain to capture documentary photography. In 1946, Dupain was asked by the Department of Information to photograph Australia's way of life as a campaign to increase migration to Australia.

WORLD:
4. How did Dupain's world influence his work, what subjects did he tend to explore through his photography.

Dupain's world influences his work because depending on where he was around the world he would take different types of pictures. Most of Max Dupain's famous pictures are at the beach. An example of a famous image at the beach is one of a man lying down on the sand on his stomach with his head faced down. His arms are rapped around his head. The photo is also taken at a low view point so his head and a bit of his back is visible. Dupain usually explores the beach subjects for his photographs because most of his most successful photos were taken at the beach.

5. Locate one interesting quote by the photographer, that gives a personal view about his work.

The quote "Photography is a new means of expression in society. In hundred years it has evolved
to a state of being a primary visual force in our lives". (1947). This gives a personal view
about his work because he says that it means a new expression in society and Dupain
certainly brought that through his time as a photographer. He also states that it has become

primary visual force in our lives. Photography is what drives us to new adventures. It tells 1000 words. We can express our thoughts, feelings and ideas through a still, simple image. He is saying this because it his time it was.

ARTWORK:
6. choose an image by Dupain add it to your post, include the citation details (title, date, medium, size)

Violinist rehearsing at the Methodist Ladies’ College in Burwood, Sydney, 1971 NAA: B4498, 28E7

7. Discuss the structural qualities in the work, composition, subject matter, contrast, techniques etc...

This is an amazing image showing off Max Dupain's photographic practice. This image shows a great contrast between light and dark tones. The composition of the photo is well thought out in producing this compelling image. The subject matter (violinist) stands out really well like the other figures. This is due to the contrast between the light and dark tones. She seems larger than the rest of them. This is maybe because of the viewpoint, where this photo was probably taken at a lower angle. This has was probably done to create strong focus on the violinist.

What Do I Understand about this Task

For this task, I will try to manage my time more wisely so that I am able to have sufficient time to piece together the assignment as a whole. From the task, I understand that I need to be able to take good photos and edit it well so that they look aesthetically brilliant. I also will need to understand how to use photoshop to be able to edit my work so that the photos looked better for my assignment. In my other assignments, I did everything in the last minute, and so for this one i'm determined to manage my time wisely and finish with some time to spare to produce and edit a good assignment. I understand that this assignment will allow a lot of time and know I will need to put a lot of effort into it to achieve the highest possible mark I can get.

Term 3

Shapes and Shadows

By Max Dupain

This image is one that is compositionally brilliant as well as aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The use of placing the subject matter in the middle of the photo, adds more meaning to the photo rather then placing it somewhere else. It makes us as the audience focus on the way the man is lying down, asking questions such as: What is he doing?, Is he sad? and Why is he lying like that?. The fact that the image is black and white gives us a sense of mystery. The light used in this photo is naturally lit from the sun and aids in the creation of the shadows of the mans body and the contrast of light and dark colours in the photo. The blur of the sand lets us focus on the position of the man on the sand, it also creates a layer of smooth surface so that the patterns in the shadows are clear on the blurred sand. We as the audience find a sense of grief because we do not understand why the man is doing what he is doing.
